The future is the combination of bright red, clear blue, neon green and vivid yellow,
It sounds like a mixture of echoes calling from an unknown place. The future smells fresh and different, Although it might taste bitter; just like coffee. The future looks like a gambler about to bet on millions of dollars, It may feel be promising, but it is also undeniably uncertain.

Discriminating, unjust, prejudice,
On the walls, doors, and by the fireplace, Sunday precepts. Clawing at the minds of innocent people. “Watch thou for the mutant”, “In purity our salvation” The citizens of Waknuk have been brainwashed, solely by fear of tribulation, And believe that offences, blasphemies, and deviations; all dispute the image of God. They’re wrong. They’re Repentances. Hello, my name is Von Miller Romero; I’m 18 years old, tall, strong, and I’m a member District 9. I have a brother named Pita Romero, who is 2 years younger. Since I was 6, my brother and I have been living in the local village hospital as orphans, where our parents had worked before they died. For the past 12 years, the hospital’s faculty has generously offered us shelter and food, providing our livelihood, and supporting our careers. However, 2 years ago, the board of directors requested Pita and I to find our own jobs, and to pay for the service from them. Our options were limited since the hospital could no longer afford jobs for us. Stressed and anxious, we devoted days trying to find a suitable job. Thankfully, the “District 9’s Finest,” a bakery that needed immediate impact for success, hired us, knowing what we were capable of. I was put in the position of collecting grain for the bakery, while by brother was hired as the chief baker. Although my job required way more intensity and durability, I enjoyed being out in the sun every day, giving back to our district. Our lives were getting easier as the days passed by, as we adapted to our new life style. However, 5 months ago, I fractured my vertebrae on a miscalculated tackle in a pickup football game against my friends. I was forced to temporarily quit my job to rehab. I had no other choice then to put my name in the tesserae for the sake of the bakery, therefore increasing my chances of getting chosen as tribute. Although the odds aren’t exactly in my favor in the next reaping, I am just happy that my brother doesn’t have to experience the unfortunate turn of events that occurred to me.
DIVERSIS Title Meaning: The world “Different” in Latin. I chose this because the Utopia I created is diverse and contains different kinds of people. “Utopia” From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: -An imaginary and indefinitely remote place -A place of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions -An impractical scheme for social improvement Description My Utopian Society is a world with acceptance and tolerance. In the real world, a lot of people are made fun of because of their race, disabilities, or sexuality. These situations happen everyday, sometimes even unnoticeable to us. We definitely need a society like mine since everyone in the world should be accepted and tolerated. The people in my treat everyone around equally, no matter what type of person they are. My Utopian Community is composed of more than 10,000 people from all around the globe. This community allows anyone of any race or any background to dwell in it. The leaders of this community have minimal impact on the choices that keep this society thriving, therefore creating a complete democracy. In this Utopia, everyone gets to make his or her own choice, though it must not harm anyone around. Also, no one gets to utilize other people for their own good without the other person’s consent. Although the community is fairly crowded, it trains and teaches citizens to accept their surroundings, and connects them between completely different cultures. Overall, my Utopia accepts, tolerates, and connects. Personally, I believe that acceptance and tolerance is a major issue around the globe. If we think deeply, it is how bullying, slaughtering, and even in some cases, war happens. A lot of places in the world are unlike where we live, a lot of people in the world act different than how we act, so in my opinion, human beings have to start connecting with each other, and accept the diversity on our planet. The Primary 8 Laws of Diversis 1. Bullying is strongly prohibited 2. One must not utilize others without acceptance in their own advantage (Slavery, for example) 3. No racism (Jokes between cultures are permitted, only to a certain extent though) 4. Treat everyone equally 5. Respect the religions of others 6. Respect the sexual orientation of others 7. A small portion of English and sign language must be learnt prior to entry due to the difference of language 8. Do not kill/steal/rape/assault etc. Consequences Citizens in this Utopia (Diversians) are trained to respect the "Primary 8," and if one is caught breaking rules 1-6, there are consequences. If a child aged from 8-18 breaks rules 1-6, they are "rewarded" with extra homework and a Friday detention. Adults, aged 18+ have a part of their wage/money taken back depending on the severity of the crime. Rule 7 is completed and checked before entry to this Utopia. While breaking rule 8 deserves a kick in the butt out of Diversis. Wavin' Flag, by K'naan, is a song that exemplifies the question "How can war distort human relationships." When K'naan was 11 years old, a gunman opened fire on K'naan and his friends, who were just playing around. K'naan wasn't injured, but all three of his friends were shot dead. This unspeakable horror gave K'naan the idea of created the song "Wavin' Flag." The song's chorus: "When I get older, I will be stronger, they'll call me freedom, just like a waving' flag," is a self-encouraging response to the unfortunate event. As we all know, Somalia is one of the most unstable countries in the world. Human relationships could be distorted through political disagreement, which then causes war. In K'naan's case, the civil war in Somalia caused his 3 best friends to be shot dead, and maybe even aggravated the dispute between Somalis. Since K'naan knew the feeling of war, I though that this song best exemplifies the main question.

On October 2, 2012, Nicolas Ivie, a U.S. border patrol agent was shot by friendly fire while patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border. Just like "The Sniper," the event took place deep in the night, when Ivie opened fire first on two of his own colleagues, mistaking them as armed smugglers. He was immediately killed on the return fire. The three of them, regardless of who they were shooting at, were probably only thinking about themselves at the time. But they did not know, that it was one of their own, who they were firing at. Unfortunately, one of them had to die. While, friendly fire is an fortuitous portion in war, it can also very easily distort our relationships. As we learned from the stories of Pat Tillman, Nicolas Ivie, and "The Sniper," war can definitely and easily distort human relationships. War is an appalling part of life; it involves killing, destroying, slavery, and a lot of other horrible things. However, the distortion of human relations is unavoidable. Sometimes, its lies that distort the relationships. Sometimes, people accidentally kill their own teammates. And sometimes, people must kill their own family and friends. All of those, might seem like success at first, but when you realize what you've really done, the feeling is unbearable. In Tillman's case, it was a lie from the U.S. Army that distorted the family's relationship with them. In Ivie's case, he was accidentally shot by his own colleagues. And in "The Sniper," the main character killed his brother, who had a different opinion in the war. The result of war is agonizing to a lot of people, who might have lost their loved ones. A lot of people gain hatred after war, knowing what they have lost, and the destruction the others have caused. There is only one way, one single way, to stop the distortion of human relationships in wars, and that is, to CEASE FIRE! Phoebe Prince's Story
The devastating real-life story of Phoebe Prince's torturing connects to the short story “All Summer in a Day” in many ways. Phoebe was a normal child who just moved from Ireland to Massachusetts, just like Margot, in the story “All Summer in a Day,” moved from Earth to Venus. Both got tortured by other kids who were jealous of them. In Phoebe’s case, the bullies were jealous of her connection to a very popular boy. Margot got tortured because she had the opportunity to see the sun on Earth, unlike the other kids who lived in Venus. At one point, they were both locked in a closet by the bullies, who despised them. Phoebe was assaulted, and had bottles thrown at her, while Margot's classmates ignored her. At last, Margot didn’t get to see the sun she waited for in years, while Phoebe suicide after she couldn’t resist the bullying she received. Text to World The story “All Summer in a Day” connects to the real world in many ways. Bullying happens every 7 minutes on the playground, and every 25 minutes in the classroom. This is very serious considering it's the same children getting bullied over and over again. Children that get bullied often keep their problems a secret to others. And many times, it goes unnoticed to parents and teachers, just like the teacher didn't know how her children behaved to Margot. Many times, bullying results in students withdrawing from a school, an in the short story, Margot's parents are also thinking of bringing her back to Earth. Text to Text The story "All Summer in a Day" reminds me of the book "Starclimber." In "Starclimber", scientists made new inventions in order to reach outer space, just like how scientists did in "All Summer in a Day" These two stories are both science fiction, Fiction based on imagined future scientific inventions. Both of these books also contain people experimenting life outside of earth, in space. At the end, both main characters are desperate to return to Earth. Text to Self Although I haven't experienced bullying myself, I've seen people getting bullied, just like Margot did in the short story "All Summer in a Day." When I was in grade 2, I witnessed a third grader torment a disabled second grader. The bully called him names, and then stole his lunch, and even punched and kicked him a few times. Everybody was afraid to step up, worried that they would get bullied themselves. The adults never found out about it, just like the teacher in the short story. |
